Home robot crew · Day 1

Buzz talks.
Armzz does.

A talking space ranger and a two-armed robot cart, learning to share a home.

Meet the crew
Buzz Lightyear, in white, lime and purple armour under a clear dome helmet, riding on Armzz: a white three-shelf cart with two robot arms, a camera head and a spinning lidar. Buzz's small computer with its microphone array and speaker sits beside them. Click either robot and they will say something.

Meet the crew

The real Buzz: a Robosen Buzz Lightyear robot with a clear dome helmet, photographed at home.

Buzz: the talker.

A Robosen Buzz Lightyear with a voice of his own.

  • Hears “Hey Buzz” and answers in his own voice, mouth moving along.
  • Knows 209 film lines by heart, and can say anything else too.
  • Flips the lights and tells you how warm it is.

Armzz: the doer.

An XLeRobot: two robot arms, a camera head and a spinning lidar on a white three-shelf cart.

  • Finds you in the room and keeps looking at you.
  • Looks around, stretches and keeps a diary.
  • Turns its head on a word: “Hey Buzz, look at the door.”

Built, tested and kept honest by one human at home.

Small robots, big personalities

  • Just say “Hey Buzz”

He listens, thinks and answers in a voice of his own.

  • “Look at the door”

Armzz turns its head to the spot you name.

  • “Where’s the remote?”

Buzz checks the cameras and remembers where things were last seen.

  • Knows your voice

He learns your voice when you ask, and doesn’t answer the TV.

  • Keeps a diary

Ask “What have you been up to?” and get a real answer.

  • Thinks out loud

At home, their thoughts and decisions play live on a little wall tablet.

Say “Hey Buzz”. Five things happen.

  1. Ears

    hears his name

  2. Words

    turns speech into text

  3. Brain

    writes his answer

  4. Voice

    says it out loud

  5. Mouth

    moves along

All on computers in the house. No cloud.

Armzz sees the room in laser light.

A spinning laser measures everything around the cart, ten times a second, out to 12 metres. Slice by slice, it becomes a map.

A simulated scan of a made-up room.

They keep hours, like good housemates.

Right now at home: …

Waking8–10 am
Lively10 am–6 pm
Calm6–9 pm
Sleepy9–10 pm
Asleep10 pm–8 am

From ten at night to eight in the morning they’re asleep, and Buzz keeps his thoughts to himself.

Good housemates

  • Asleep by ten

  • Asks before learning a face or a voice

  • Heaters off, never on

  • A big red STOP knob

The story so far

  1. First words over Bluetooth

  4. A new brain

  5. Thoughts, feelings and curiosity

  6. “Look at the door”

  7. A desk of their own
